Hi Gisli! My experience is the same as yours, whilst I started with salsa, as soon as I discovered Bachata, I know i have found my passion! Good to meet more Bachateros around the world!

Have to admit I got tears in my eyes when I read this thread. I started dancing salsa 8 years ago, 2003, and at the time it was the one dance that I really loved. Everything I had been searching for. But then in 2007, I had my first ever bachata lesson. And suddenly everything changed. All of a sudden, the music was actually good. And instead of doing loads of intricate turn patterns, I was actually dancing to the music and interpreting what I was hearing. I still dance salsa by the way but bachata has changed my salsa style. I don’t think about the turn patterns anymore but only about interpreting the music. And I don’t take salsa workshops anymore but only bachata. Living in Iceland, it means I have to travel for that and since 2009, I have been going to most of the major european bachata workshops there are. Bachata tules!

What Does Bachata mean to me…??

Without sounding too overly dramatic about this….Bachata to me, is a dance that touches my soul, in a way all the other Latin Dances I do, just can’t quite compete with….Bachata is the one dance, that can be such an intimate sensual dance, between two people, that with the right chemistry and passion, it can be akin to a legal high..

It has the ability (with a particularly amazing Bachata dance), to have me walking out of the club in the late evening, and down the street with a huge smile on face, and still has me thinking about the dance the next day at work.

Two people utterly connected, and in synch with each other, that nothing else other than the partner you are dancing with is relevant, and the only thing that can top it, is an even better dance…and so I find myself constantly searching for that ‘Perfect Dance’ (which I know, doesn’t exist)…to replicate that feeling again…

If I had to sum up what makes Bachata so great, in a few simple words, I’d have to say it’s when “Two People move as One”…is what makes it so great!!

wow…………………… for a lots of people that are not even latinos there is a lots of love for bachata to bad that your love for bachata is not real but a wish… but is all good , when you put something in your head some times you begin to believe your own lies is human nature. For you too love it you have to understand it and you don’t simple as that.

When my luck is down and everything seems to go wrong….

Bachata with its dance and music is the one thing that puts the smile and sparkle back. It gives me freedom to express myself and to let my inner self free.

It reminds me that I’m full of Passion and Love for Life that I forget all my troubles. Viva La Passion y el Amor!

to me Bachata is danced with the soul and from the heart. The sensuous movements in perfect alignment with your parter creates an almost ethereal experience where you lose yourself in the music and that particular moment in time. When i’m dancing the rest of the world fades and there is only me and my partner in flawless communion of our bodies. Each dance is an exhilarating experience.

Bachata:

Bachata is like Pringles, ones you start you can’t stop.
Bachata is like a chocolate; sweet, smooth and addictive.
Bachata is like a cheese, the longer you dance the better you become.
And finally Bachata is like a fruit salad, the fusion of traditional and moderna style.

Art, I like your analogy of bachata dancers vs salsa dancers. Very nice!

On your last paragraph, the bachata dance is evolving, same goes for the music. I’m actually eager to see how it evolves

Robert C. and Anthony M both hit the nail on the head. Bachata lets you love and enjoy it instead of ‘taking over’ and just going frigging crazy like salsa does. I still like salsa but bachata vs. salsa is like the difference between a girl who’s just friendly and easy to get along with vs. some chic who’s always primping, nervous and high maintinance……..i.e. a dance you can play with without crashing, get to know on your own terms and really build an equal, strong relationship with.

I just hope bachata doesn’t where it’s so complicated that it’s not fun for average people to do…..like salsa has become to some degree.
