As per the other series, we have 2 heats, one on Wednesday 28th of July, and the next one on Wednesday 4th of August. The grand finals are on the 11th of August!

One song, one dance! That’s the comp! This is what the judges will be looking for

This is an OPEN competition, meaning that amateurs and professionals can join because we are looking for the best SOCIAL dancers. The most important thing is to show SABOR!

This past Wednesday, 21st of June, Sydney crowned its BEST BACHATA SOCIAL DANCERS!

The Bachata Series (part of the Sydney’s Best Social Dancer competition), similar to the Zouk series, was full of energy, surprises and above all, good times! Coolabar –the venue, was packed on the night, from professional to amateur dancers! Everybody was ready to witness what the Sydney Bachateros can do.

Heat 1 and Heat 2 of the Bachata Series brought together a total of 10 couples! Our judges Sky Blue, Lidia McMahon, Fernando Providel, Alexis Meza and El Moro had a tough job selecting the winners of each heat, as each couple displayed amazing Bachata skills. At the end, there were 4 couples competing for the title.

The night started, all 4 couples were called to the dance floor and they had a short warm up in front of an energetic audience. Then, each couple randomly selected the order of their appearance. And it so it began! We were graced by beautiful Dominican style and Traditional style Bachata, lots of body movement, sexy and cheeky combinations plus awesome dips!

Even though it was a very close competition, one couple stood out from the rest. Famous couple Nestor Manuelian and Katrina Quintal was crowned Sydney’s BEST SOCIAL BACHATA Dancers. Congratulations Nestor and Katrina, well deserved!

Huge congratulations to Felino & Marianne and Santino & Denisse, both couples placed 2nd, and congratulations to Amit and Rebecca as well.

Zouk Series is over, Bachata Series is over, but the Social dance competition is not closed to be over yet. Starting next Wednesday (28th of June), Sydney is in the lookout for its BEST SALSERO! If you think the Zouk and Bachata series were hot… the SALSA series will be… spectacular!!

1. Are the bachata workshops open for everybody?
Yes, they are, they will be OPEN level. In the morning we have 2 workshops, and in the afternoon we have the performance bootcamp

2. Can I take only the performance bootcamp?
Yes you can. But why pay $50 for the performance training only. We do recommend to experience the whole day (workshops + performance training + party entry) for only $70. Make the most of the day!
3. Do I have to perform at the Bachata Barrio party when I take the performance training?
No, it’s up to you. But I promise you, you will want to perform it for sure!

4. I have never performed before, can I join the performance training?
Then, this is the best opportunity for you to experience what it feels to perform (without having to enrol in a 10+ weeks course). See what it feels to train and work together as a team. Experience the adrenaline of performing in front of a crowd!
Make sure you tell your friends and family to come and support you

5. Do I need a partner to join the performance workshop?
No, we will make sure that we have equal numbers. But if you have a partner in mind, please let us know.

6. What’s the difference between Dominican and Moderna Style Bachata?
Dominican Style Bachata consists of footwork and syncopated steps. It is very cheeky. Dominican is best suited for traditional Bachata music.
Moderna Style Bachata is based on close connection and the turn patterns are more complex. Moderna is best suited for the new urban latin bachata.

7. Will the party consist only of Bachata music?
No, Bachata will be played for about 50% of the time. We will make sure that we play Salsa, Zouk, Cha Cha and other Latin Rhythms. Everyone is welcome!

Juan Ruiz
Juan known as the “Father of Bachata” in Australia. He is one of the best known Bachata promoters in the world, and a pioneer of the Bachata Moderna style. Juan has taught and performed in Australia and all over the world.
Juan’s unique Bachata style is known as Bachata Moderna, which is based on the concept of the crosses and the flavour of Zouk, Kizomba, Tango and R&B. He has an incredible talent of fusing the passion of these dance styles whilst remaining true to the Bachata form, maintaining the feeling & emotional elements that makes Bachata what it is.
Juan Ruiz is also one of the directors of the biggest Bachata festivals, the Sydney International Bachata Festival.

Josie Cote
The 2009 Australian Salsa Champion professional division. Even though she is one of the best salsa dancers in Australia and the world, her passion is Bachata. Josie is known for her sexy body movement and styling that make the audience go wild.
Josie has taught and perform salsa and bachata all over the world, including exotic countries as New Caledonia, Malaysia and more.

Freddie Munoz’s Bachata is the perfect combination of traditional Bachata and Pop music. In his music, one can feel the classical romantic sounds of the guitar mixed with the seductive tempo of the percussion (particularly the bongos). His most popular song, “Inocente” is a true sample of this perfect combination. Freddie has also re-edited famous songs and converted them into beautiful Bachata melodies; the Bachata versions of “How deep is your love” (original version by the Bee Gees) and “La Copa Rota” (original version by Julio Jaramillo) are worth listening and dancing to.

His track “Amiga” (name of his album as well), the first single of his album, caused a major impact in the Bachata scene since its release in 2009. Freddie’s Bachatas are currently being played on major radio stations in New York, Miami and the Dominican Republic. Freddie has performed all over the United States, Central America and South America and has shared the stage with other great artists such as La India, Hector Acosta, Cabas and more.

One can only wonder, how long will it take for Freddie’s Bachata to become popular here in Australia… not long, for sure!
