More than just bachata
March 9, 2009 by Juan Ruiz · 3 Comments
I learnt Bachata in the USA, many years ago, almost a decade ago. The Bachata I learnt was influenced by the Dominicans, Puertoricans, Mexicans and other Latinos living in Chicago, USA. As it probably happened to you as well, I felt in love with the music and I felt in love with the dance right away.
Listening to Aventura’s song “Obsession” or Monchy y Alexandra’s “Dos locos” in the nightclub made me want to grab the first available lady and start dancing close Bachata with her. I learnt the close Bachata movements, I learnt the dips, I learnt the turn combinations, I really thought that I learnt everything that there was to Bachata (Now I know I learnt what is known as Bachata Traditional). My Bachata Princess
January 21, 2009 by Juan Ruiz · 4 Comments
There has been lot of talk about that mysterious “Red dragon” among ladies lately. It just got me thinking that guys too must be having their own “Red Dragon”. I’ll call her something else. “Princess” I think would be more appropriate. There happens to be a story behind it. There was this lady who came to Sydney from nowhere. Guys just admired the way she moved on a dance floor. No one knew her name at the time. We used to call her “princess.” Read more
Bachata, straight from the Dominican Republic
November 25, 2008 by Juan Ruiz · 5 Comments
My trip to the Dominican Republic was not well timed with the ravages of Cyclone Hanna and Ike furiously beating at the shores of DR and it’s Caribbean neighbours. But the weather was no hindrance to the soul and determination of the people and so we danced! I took the opportunity to shake my booty and move with the true blooded Dominicans and see what it’s like to be led by those who have been immersed in the rhythms of Bachata and Salsa from birth. I was not disappointed. Read more
Bachateros Do Australia Tour, the story
October 2, 2008 by Juan Ruiz · 2 Comments
The idea of organizing a Bachata Tour in Australia was formed in our minds one particular day in Johor Bahru whilst admiring the beautiful beaches and enjoying the tropical atmosphere of the Malaysia Salsa Festival 08. The Bachateros crew got together under the shade of one the many Palm trees (oh the hard life of a Bachatero!) and brainstormed finally coming up with a tour idea to promote Bachata across Australia as well as increase the Bachata community, its culture and to make it a familiar dance not only in Sydney but in other states and cities in the country. Cultural understanding or the rise of a new culture?
October 2, 2008 by Juan Ruiz · Leave a Comment
Musical genres tend to suggest tangible definitions of theory and practice. However whether people actually understand these is another question. To an untrained musician, classical music may typically be thought to be synonymous to Mozart, Bach, Beethoven or any of the great composers. While for others, classical music may be in reference to anything that is orchestral or which falls under ‘art’ music. In contrast, classical music for those who frequently listen, perform or teach it would say that it is post-Baroque and pre-Romantic, covering a time frame of compositions between 1750-1830[1]. Are u a bachatero?
July 23, 2008 by Juan Ruiz · 3 Comments
There are so many thoughts and ideas that can be expressed through this one particular question. ‘Are you a Bachatero?’
Firstly, we need to define what a Bachatero is. Is it a person who dances Bachata? Listens to or creates Bachata music? Read more
Bachata, the sweetest of all tortures
I have a theory that Bachata was conceived during the inquisition times as a means of torture when the Spanish in the Americas were trying to break people into confessing they were Witches and Warlocks. Read more
