Born and raised in the Dominican Republic, Joan Soriano has been playing Bachata since his early youth, as his music was his way to endure and overcome his humble beginnings.

Joan’s latest album “El Duque de la Bachata” was released in Sept, 2010. His bachata style brings back the bitterness feeling often forgotten by the new Urban Latin Bachata groups. Listening to Joan’s music is like listening to the bachata played at the tavernas (taverns) and pubs of Santo Domingo decades ago.

In songs like “Vocales de Amor” and “Su lado de cama”, the listener can enjoy the pure sounds and exquisite melody created by the guitar and the stumpy sounds of the bongo drum. In songs like “Cal y arena” and “Mal pensado”, Joan shows that his musical flare and guitarist versatility go beyond the Bachata rhythm as he incorporates the Merengue beat with the tambora (rhythm also known as Bachatarengue or Bachata Merengue).

It is recently that Joan Soariano is becoming an international Bachata artist thanks to the documentary “El Duque de la Bachata” – “The Duke of Bachata”, produced by Adam Taub in 2008, and the support of Bachata and Latino Festivals in the USA, Joan’s music is starting to being played all over the world. (“The duke of Bachata” album is his first album released internationally).

Australia will definitely enjoy the music of Joan Soriano. For those that wish to travel to the Dominican Republic, listening to “El Duque de la Bachata” will shorten the distances between these far away countries!

Born in Puerto Rico, and raised in the Bronx, New York, Freddie has been singing Bachata since 2003, as well as other Latin rhythms such as Salsa and Merengue.

Freddie Munoz’s Bachata is the perfect combination of traditional Bachata and Pop music. In his music, one can feel the classical romantic sounds of the guitar mixed with the seductive tempo of the percussion (particularly the bongos). His most popular song, “Inocente” is a true sample of this perfect combination. Freddie has also re-edited famous songs and converted them into beautiful Bachata melodies; the Bachata versions of “How deep is your love” (original version by the Bee Gees) and “La Copa Rota” (original version by Julio Jaramillo) are worth listening and dancing to.

His track “Amiga” (name of his album as well), the first single of his album, caused a major impact in the Bachata scene since its release in 2009. Freddie’s Bachatas are currently being played on major radio stations in New York, Miami and the Dominican Republic. Freddie has performed all over the United States, Central America and South America and has shared the stage with other great artists such as La India, Hector Acosta, Cabas and more.

One can only wonder, how long will it take for Freddie’s Bachata to become popular here in Australia… not long, for sure!

But when one of these multitalented individuals decides to start their singing career, you can expect great results. This is the case of Evaristo Fama aka “El Paga Renta“.

Evaristo is a veteran in the Bachata scene, as he’s been singing from early 2000. His music has been recognized from the early 2000′s as some of his songs were added to various Bachata compilation albums distributed by Universal Studios (2004 – CD Enamorado, 2006 – CD Bachata Flow, and more).

Evaristo Fama was born in the Dominican Republic, thus we can say that he carries the Bachata in his blood. He migrated to Puerto Rico before moving to Rhode Island USA in the early 2000′s where he is currently based. These transitions and different cultures have influenced Evaristo’s Bachata style, but you can still find a strong Dominican and traditional influence in his music.

His latest work, “The New Swing of Bachata” brings the best of Evaristo’s experience in the Bachata music scene. “Un Dia Dificil“, “El Paga Renta” and “Dejame Entrar” are some of the best songs on the album. The songs range from romantic Bachata to the fast paced Bachata, with some hints of Mexican Cumbia and Merengue.

While Evaristo Fama’s music is starting to pick-up in the USA, we are yet to hear more of Evaristo’s music in Australia. His music is highly recommended from Bachateros.com.au if you are looking for a Bachata that remains true to the Dominican feeling, but adds new tunes and beats from the Urban Bachata.

It is difficult to be compared to great Bachata bands as Aventura, Xtreme and others, however Marcy Place really holds their place with their competition.

Their music is a combination of RnB, Hip-Hop, Reggaeton mixed to the beats of Bachata, which proves to be a successful combination for the young Gen Y and the radio promoters.

Marcy Place made their debut in December 2008 with the album “B from Marcy Place” (Bachata from Marcy Place). The band is composed of 3 members: JC (Juan Carlos Cabrera who was born in the Dominican Republic) and brothers Joey and Billy Pabon. Interestingly enough, JC was recording at Lenny Santos’ (from Aventura) studio which is located on Marcy Place in the Bronx, NY, when Don Omar (the current king of Reggaeton) heard them and immediately saw their potential. Offering his full support, Don Omar took Marcy Place under his wing, and as they say, the rest is history.

Their first song “Todo lo que soy” became an instant hit because of its catchy rhythm and new beats. Their second single “Dame un chance nena” was another success. More songs were composed, this time collaborating with Don Omar, Wisin Y Yandel and Jayko (all of them famous Latin artists).

Even though Marcy Place first single “Todo lo que soy” debuted on the Latin Billboard charts and their music is famous in North America and Latin America, Marcy Place’s Bachata style has not arrived to Australia yet. The Australian audience has not had the privilege to enjoy their music, but we predict that as soon as the DJs and Promoters start playing their music, their popularity will rise here in the land down under.

Only a few bands have been able to stand out from the rest, and this is the case of Opalo. Their distinctive approach to Urban Latin Bachata has pushed this band to the top of the charts in America, especially with their hit single “Amor Sincero”.

Opalo is a Bachata band composed of 4 members: Alex, Edward, Ricky and Yeudy. All of the four members are from the Dominican Republic, so their music style, even though it is the new urban Bachata, are deeply set into their Dominican style roots.

Opalo maintains the high pitch guitar sound used commonly in the Dominican style Bachata on their music. However they have added strong base lines and hip-hop tunes into their music which softens their music to give listeners a truly enjoyable experience. Their second album “Tiempo de relevo” is a true interpretation of this. Their single “Amor Sincero” is a fast pace song with a positive beat. This is a song that could be use for choreography because of the several music breaks and changes. The second single “Si no the vuelvo a ver” is another fast pace Bachata with a catchy melody.

Opalo music’s has not been heard in Australia. Few schools and DJs play their music so it has not reached their true potential yet. The Bachateros highly recommend their music, especially both hit singles “Amor sincero” and “Si no te vuelvo a ver”. We hope to see bands like this receive the play time that they deserve.

Since the release of this unstoppable hit, the popularity of 4Ever has grown world-wide.

4Ever is composed of four members, Inoel, Luis, Eidan & Delvis. Even though they have deep Puerto Rican origins, 4Ever were raised near Boston, United States. All band members have known each other from an early age, giving themselves a distinctive sense of brotherhood that is unmistakably evident in the band.

4Ever’s Bachata style is a tasteful combination of Hip Hop and R&B tunes mixed together with Latin rhythms and true Bachata beats. Their genre of music is what we now call Latin Urban Bachata, a modern form and evolution of the traditional Bachata. This new style of Bachata is what mainstream radio stations play on prime time programs, and is also what most DJs play on their music list. 4Ever’s Bachata can easily be mixed with other rhythms and songs.

Following the success of “Por Que Te Amo”, the band released two other major singles “Locutor” and “Mas Que Un Amor”. “Locutor” is a ballad with distinguishing attributes of a strong beat, modern and fresh new tempo with a smooth romantic melody that sets the songs style and versatility apart from your average slow romantic song.

In Australia, the song “Por Que Te Amo” was used for a very popular and much sought after Bachata choreography by the Latin Motion Bachateros which definitely helped raised the profile of 4Ever. Currently, 4Ever’s music is played at various Latin venues and nightclubs around Sydney and state wide Australia. Still, the Australian market could certainly enjoy their music a lot more. With 4Ever’s new singles, it is a sure thing that their music will undoubtedly become a favorite soon.

The band is composed of four members: Elvis, Eddie, Jalen James and Ariel. Each of them has a background of extensive and substantial musical history as both, singers and/or composers.

Toque De Kedas Bachata composition is what many people consider to be the ‘New Bachata,’ a combination of catchy Hip Hop and Pop melodies that move fluently through the Bachata rhythm. Their catchy tunes not only attract fans from the Bachata community but also from other mainstream audiences. Because of their appealing beat, rhythm and diverse music style they can be played on any radio station or in any club. Many who don’t know Bachata are simply hooked into their music.

Following from the debut of the famed “Lamento Boliviano”, Toque De Keda released other well-known songs like: Debo Pensar, Te Extraño (another inventive remake of Ricky Martin’s Spanish ballad – Te Extraño – watch youtube video) and Pobre Mendigo, all of which are included on the “Picando Adelante” album.

Toque De Kedas music has not yet reached wide spread airplay in Australia. Similar to Mojito Project‘s music, many Australian Latino DJs are not familiar with the band, or refuse to play their music as it is not considered to be ‘true’ Bachata due to their European heritage and influence which is of course, different from the Dominican Republic. But, their music has been used in many instructional Bachata DVDs, performed in many choreographies and played in many dance schools. People are being exposed to their music and it’s only a matter of time before Toque De Kedas popularity grows in the mainstream Australian community for sure!

With each DJ comes a different collective background of varying genres of music including Dance, Electronica & Latin music. It is not hard to imagine the amount of musical knowledge & experience they bring together.

Their first single ‘Te Quedas Te Vas,’ released in mid 2006 with guest singer ‘Romy’ a.k.a Romano Splinter Rojas, was a smash hit in Italy & Europe. With a phenomenal response from Bachata fans, it was no wonder various Bachateros started using the song for choreographies & performances. It’s rising popularity owing much to the power of the songs musical conversion of Bachata guitar rifts, catchy pop culture melodies and a visible added electronic dimension. From then on, Mojito Project has now released other well received singles ‘Tu Calor’, ‘Amor Perdoname’ & ‘Vuelve.’

While similar to Toque De Keda, Mojito Project’s Bachata music is a fusion of original Bachata characteristics of a high pitch guitar melody introduced to Dance/Pop tunes & beats with electronic compositions in the strong yet short musical breaks.

In Australia, the Latin community is yet to be exposed to Mojito Project. Not many of the local Latin DJ’s are aware of this band or its music due to their Italian heritage as opposed to original Latin America and also because Mojito Project’s style of Bachata music breaks the standard expectations of a Bachata song. Although, their songs have been played in many Latin Dance schools and other venues besides just dance clubs and have had a great response so far.

It is a matter of time for Mojito Projects music to become popular in Australia.

Their music is highly recommended by the Bachateros staff.
